Hannah Duston Emerson: A Trailblazer and Inspiration

One of the highlights of my trip was the chance to visit the statue of my 12th generation grandmother, Hannah Duston Emerson. She holds a unique place in American history as the first woman in the United States to have a statue erected in her honor. It’s a testament to her extraordinary life and the impact she had on the community.

Hannah Duston Emerson’s story is one of resilience and strength. She lived in the 17th century, a time when life was exceptionally challenging, especially for women. In the face of adversity, she stood tall and left a legacy that still inspires us today.

A Brave Woman’s Legacy

Hannah Duston Emerson’s most famous feat was her escape from captivity in 1697 during King William’s War. It’s a reminder that life’s most meaningful experiences often lie in our roots and in the pursuit of our passions.

A Visit to History: The Emerson Home

While in Haverhill, I had the privilege of visiting the home that was built by Hannah’s husband and was merely a half mile from the very place where Hannah and her nurse were captured from. This historic home, constructed in 1697, still stands as a testament to the enduring history of the town. Stepping into the same space where my ancestors lived and experienced their trials was a truly humbling experience.
